Hokkaido in Japan

March 11th, 2008

Flowers in Furano Hokkaido

Mountain in Hokkaido

Hokkaido, the northernmost island of Japan, is known as a popular travel destination, for skiing in winter, for the beautiful scenery and flowers in summer.

In Furano, the flowers bloom splendidly in summer, from tulips to lavender. In winter, skiiers head to Niseko or Rusutsu for some excellent slopes and soft powder snow.

Hokkaido is also know for it’s fresh seafood, with large fishing ports at Hakodate and Otaru. The seafood market at Hakodate is an attraction in itself, for gourmets looking for the freshest, tastiest sashimi and sushi.

The public transport network in Hokkaido is not quite as well developed as it is in the rest of Japan, and it is recommended that those who can, would enjoy renting a car to travel around. There are beautiful national parks, like Daisetsuzan, within which there are hot spring resorts where travellers go to rejuvenate and relax. Examples include Sounkyo onsen and Noboribetsu hot spring resort town.

Travelling to Hokkaido

The largest airport on Hokkaido is the Chitose airport. However, not many international flights land or depart here. It would be far easier to fly to Tokyo and transfer to a domestic flight from Tokyo to Chitose airport.

Alternatively, take a train from Tokyo. The train ride takes approximately 16 hours to reach Sapporo from Tokyo.

Cities in Hokkaido

The largest cities in Hokkaido are Sapporo and Hakodate. However, these cities are more laid back compared to their more cosmopolitan counterparts on Honshu and Kyushu. Shopping is also more expensive.

Stay tuned as we bring you more on romantic resorts in Hokkaido, where you can enjoy an unforgettable honeymoon.

Cannes you feel the Mediterranean ambience ?

February 14th, 2008

Cannes

Most renowned for it’s film festival - a celebration of that archetypical brand of intellectual snobbery the French excuse as avant garde - Cannes shelters in a narrow coastal plain that meets the Meditteranean at the upscale La Napoule-plage.

A palm-fringed corniche and an unbroken line of bulbous Belle epoque hotels back an exclusive beach lined with umbrellas where the rich and shameless strut, smooch and slumber.

The Promenade de la Croisette of central Cannes houses a full complement of couture boutiques where the so-inclined can accessorise to bankruptcy on Parisienne silk, Milanese leather and Swiss clockwork.

During the day, the focus is on the fine white sands - meticulously raked each night - and the azure blue of the warm Mediterranean.

When night falls, another side of the Promenade comes alive and some of the finest dining in the world is on tap in a wealth of superb restaurants. IF you’ve ever been disappointed with other casinos, know that Cannes is one of the few places where they live up to the James Bond stereotype. Named after the festival’s awards, La Palm d’Or is a gastronomic dream in 1930s decor. Sit on the terrace, which offers a superb panoramic view of the bay of Cannes, and pen your own acceptance speech

Iliovasilema Hotel Apartments Santorini - Where to honeymoon

July 31st, 2007

Set in the rustic, romantic village of Omerovigli, 350 m above sea level, the Iliovasilema Hotel Apartments probably offer the best value for money, and the most romantic resort destination in Santorini, which is saying something. With just a modest 18 rooms in  this establishment, the service is as good as expected. The rooms are modest but comfortable with great views, but we’re guessing you would love to spend your days on the pool deck, to enjoy the view and the wonderful romantic sunset, a drink of our choice in hand.

A healthy 20 minute walk away from the main town of Fira, and with several good restaurants nearby, you might find yourself not going far from your hotel for the duration of your trip.

For honeymooners, the junior suite would be a good choice. If you get here before you’re married, you might even decide to hold your wedding here - Nothing as neon-gaudy as a Vegas chapel - complete with a wedding cake, champagne and fireworks.

The cool seasons of spring and autumn - also the low seasons - are the best time to visit. Prices start from 210 euros for the junior suite, or 140 euros for the twin studio.

The Orizontes Hotel in Santorini Greece

July 31st, 2007

Perched on the highest point of Santorini island, and boasting a fantastic, spectacular view, the Orizontes hotel is probably as good a destination as any for a honeymoon.

With consistently good service, typical of the hospitable Greek culture, air conditioned rooms with private balconies each boasting spectacular views that you’ll never get tired off, especially the sunrise and sunset, where you can enjoy quiet time together and romantic dinners. The swimming pool and jacuzzi offer view of both the island and the coast.

It can get quite warm in summer, and somewhat chilly in winter, making both spring and autumn the best time to visit this island paradise.

The downside is that this hotel is a distance away from the town of Fira, a 6 euro taxi ride away, which means that dinner out will cost a little more, and require that extra effort. Those who prefer to be in the thick of the action, the restaurants and cafes, would prefer a hotel in Fira or Ia, but those out for privacy and romance would like the Orizontes. Prices start from 120 euro per person per day.

Where to stay in Singapore - the Raffles Hotel

July 19th, 2007

Raffles Hotel

The Raffles Hotel was opened on 1 December 1887, a mere three-storey, 10-room bungalow. It was gradually expanded when three buildings were added to the Beach House, starting with two-storey wings which added 22 new suites, before the Billiard Room was built at the junction of Beach Road and Bras Basah Road, and finally, the Palm Court Wing which was completed in 1894.

The Main Building designed by R. A. J. Bidwell, built on the site of the original Beach House, was completed on 18 November 1899. It was designed with modern conveniences, including powered ceiling fans and electric lights. The Dining Room, which stretched across the entire ground floor, was capable of seating up to 500 people.

Here in the Raffles Hotel, the famous Singapore Sling was first concocted in 1915.

On 1 March 1989, the Hotel underwent major renovations before reopening in 1991. Restored at a cost of S$160 million, with addition of a new block containing a theatre and a shopping arcade with more than 60 shops, Raffles Hotel was able to regain it’s former majesty and splendour. Raffles Hotel remains famous for its tiffin room, the buffet lunch at its Palm Court and for being the location where the Singapore Sling was first concocted.

Boasting 103 splendid suites, each with a beautiful garden view and an ambience as private and intimate as any, visitors can enjoy the colonial architecture, tall ceilings, gentle breezes, and beautiful paintings and art.

The Amrita Spa is second to none in offering luxurious pampering treatment.

Sited downtown, within walking distance of the central shopping belt, this is a place to stay. Prices start a little expensive, but are well worth it if you can afford their rooms which start from USD 330.

Where to stay in Tyrol - the Arlberg Hospiz

July 14th, 2007

The Arlberg Hospiz, located in the centre of St Christoph, holds an important place in the history of Alpine skiing, when the Skiclub Arlberg was founded within the solid walls of the Hospiz.

The history of the Hospiz can be traced back to Henry the Foundling, who first set up a hostel in St Christoph. It was rebuilt in 1957 as the first five-star hotel on the Arlberg, with showers and WCs in every room.

Owner Florian Werner presently runs the Arlberg Hospiz.

Arlberg Hospiz

Surrounding by snow in winter, visitors can step right out of the hotel into the snow. A nearby chair lift station connects skiiers to the network of trails in the Tyrol region. Buses also run to the nearby Lech, Zurs and St Anton. The hotel boasts rooms from single studios to suites big enough for 10 people, at rates averaging 80 euros per person per night. Prices are significantly cheaper compared with the nearby swiss ski resort of St Moritz, with the skiing no less engaging. Skiiers will find the powdery snow in February optimal.

Dining at the hotel restaurant offers a choice of Austrian food, which pairs well with the choice of Bordeaux wines. But the main strength of the hotel lies in the friendly and attentive service that keeps the regulars coming back.
